The Lamu Marine Conservation Trust (LaMCoT) and Peponi Hotel have always been linked, as LaMCoT was set up by Carol Korschen in 1992 to protect endangered sea turtles. Since it has become a community run project that has grown to not only protect turtles and their nests, but to educate children and the community on the importance of protecting the environment, ensure the island and its beaches are kept clean, and help the community to set aside locally managed marine areas.
